Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on September 7, 1972.

The wavy bar is a canting element, i-tobi means green river in the local Indian language. The fleur-de-lis is the symbol of St. Mary, patron saint of the city. The wedges are derived from the arms of the Cunha family (wedge=cunha), first owners of the lands on which the city stands today. The axes symbolise the log-cutting for the Rio Pardo railroad.

The dates on the scroll are the dates of town and city rights.

The shield is flanked by coffee and corn branches, the main crops in the region.
