Origin/meaning
As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.
The cross is taken from the arms of an Irish Marshall family and used here to symbolise the name of the bishop. Being a cross it was seen as an appropriate symbol for a prelate. The two crescents commemorate Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception. She is also the patroness of the chapel of the North American College where the Bishop was ordained to the Holy Priesthood.
The two swords honor Saint Paul the Apostle on whose feast (Jan. 25) the Bishop received episcopal ordination. With the point upwards, the sword is a symbol of the spiritual armament appropriate to Saint Paul.
The field is blue, taken from the arms of the Diocese of Worcester where he served as a priest. The eagle is the revered symbol of Saint John the Evangelist
The achievement is completed with the heraldic insignia of a prelate of the rank of bishop.
