JOHN ENGLAND

Born : September 23, 1786 in Cork, Ireland
Deceased : April 11, 1842 in Charleston, South Carolina, USA

Bishop of Charleston, 1820-1842

Arms (crest) of John England

Official blazon

Argent, six bars gules, over-all a cross botonny vert.

Origin/meaning

The thirteen bars of red and silver represent the Thirteen Original States of America; the cross over the bars represents the Catholic Faith which was brought to Charleston by Bishop England. The green color of the Cross is probably in remembrance of Ireland, his native country.
