KING ISLAND

State : Tasmania

Arms (crest) of King Island
Official blazon
English blazon wanted

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on July 20, 1973.

King Island in Bass Strait is well known for two of its products: crayfish and cheese, hence the charges of the crustacean and the bulls' heads on the shield. The compartment represents the island surrounded by the sea, with the sea-horse acknowledging the importance of air transport and shipping to its economy. Both the Bennett's wallaby and elephant seal are indigenous to the island. In the early days the settlers slaughtered the seals. The "W" division is the initial of wolfram, extracted from King Island scheelite.
