Origin/meaning
The arms were granted on May 14, 1968.
The arms show a wheel, as a symbol for the railway. The railway brought prosperity to the town and turned the local village in a large city. The arms were first granted on October 7, 1912 and confirmed on October 21, 1955 and in 1968.
Lahti became a city in 1905 and new arms were to be designed for the new city. Already in 1904 arms with a melusine were designed, which in 1912 were reduced to a mermaid. These were never adopted by the city, but later by the Päijät-HämeRegion. At the same time, in 1910 arms which showed industry, railroads and agriculture (beehive) were proposed.
Finally in 1912 these latter arms were 'reduced' to a single wheel, which is still in use. These arms also had a crown, which was abolished in 1955.
