Origin/meaning

Laufenburg was named Kleinlaufenburg from 1804-1930 to distinguish it from the other half of the city on the other bank of the Rhine River. This Laufenburg (or Grosslaufenburg) is now in Switzerland and uses the same arms.

The arms show the lion of Habsburg as the oldest known ruler of the village was Count Rudolf II of Habsburg in 1207.
The Habsburg family ruled the village until the middle of the 13th century and granted the city rights. The oldest known seal dates from 1250 and showed the arms of Habsburg. The arms thus never changed even though the town has been part of Austria and Baden in later centuries.
