Origin/meaning

Linz received city rights in 1329 from Archbishop Heinrich von Virneburg of Köln. The arms first appear on the first seal of the new city and show in the upper part the cross of the State of Köln and in the lower part the key of St. Peter, the patron saint of Köln. In 1839 the cross was made smaller and placed in a chief, and the arms have not changed since.
