Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on February 22, 1409 by Duke Stephan of Bayern.

The arms were described as the arms of the former Counts of Falkenberg, who became extinct in 1272. Later their possessions were acquired by the Dukes of Bayern. The oldest known seal dates from 1444 and shows the arms, as do the later seals of the city. The oldest known coloured image of the arms dates from 1562 and the colours have not changed since.
