Origin/meaning

The arms are known from the oldest seal of the town, which dates from 1477. The lion is taken from the arms of the Margraves of Nürnberg, who ruled the town at the time. The origin of the two crowned snakes is not known. The arms were often mentioned, but the colours are known only since 1812. In 1819 the arms were officially granted.
