MELDORF

State : Schleswig-Holstein
District (Kreis) : Dithmarschen (until 1970 Süderdithmarschen)
Amt : Amt Mitteldithmarschen

Wappen von Meldorf

Official blazon

In Silber auf einem grünen Hügel, durch den sich ein mit fünf roten Sternen belegter silberner Bach schlängelt, eine fünftürmige rote Zinnenburg.

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted in 1900.

Meldorf was already mentioned as a city in 1250 and the oldest seal is known since the last half of the 13th century. The arms are based on this seal and show the city, which developed around the castle of the Archbishops of Bremen. The base shows the Miele river, which runs through the city. The meaning of the stars is not known. On the second seal, known from the 15th century the stars appear above and below the river.

Meldorf lost its city rights in 1559 and the official seal of the town now showed only St. John Baptist, the patron saint of the town. On different documents, however, the old arms (often in a slightly different composition) were still used. The city rights were again granted in 1869.
