Origin/meaning

Melle received city rights in 1443 from the Bishops of Osnabrück. The oldest known seal dates from 1532 and shows St. John Baptist as patron saint of Osnabrück, holding a shield with the wheel of the State of Osnabrück. The number of spokes in the wheel was later reduced to four and the colours were changed to red and silver. The arms were officially granted in 1937 and confirmed in 1964.
