Origin/meaning

The old (below) arms were granted on November 25, 1912, the new arms on March 21, 1979.

Neuenrade received city rights from Engelbert III, Count of the Mark, in 1355. In the 16th century the composition of the local patron saint, St. Mary, and the chequered bar of the Counts of the Mark appear on the local seals. The composition was later placed in a shield and did not change until 1979.

In the new arms the cross of the State of Köln was added in the base of the shield, as several of the villages incorporated into Neuenrade historically belonged to the State of Köln.
