Official blazon

English blazon wanted

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on March 16, 1993.

The oldest (broken) seal of the city dates from 1275 and shows a tower with an eagle in the gate. The tower with the eagle of Brandenburg in the chief appeared in the seal of 1479. In 1620 the eagle was sitting on the tower. In the 19th century the red eagle of Brandenburg was replaced by the black eagle of Preussen (see below), whereas in the mid 20th century the eagle was removed.

The towers and the open gate indicate that the city was an important trading city, open for all travellers.
