Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on August 5, 1936.

The arms are based on the oldest known seal of the city, dating from the middle of the 13th century (Oldenburg received city rights in 1235).The arms are canting, showing the local Old Castle (Olden-Burg), under the arms of the Counts of Holstein, who founded the castle, granted the city rights and ruled the city for many centuries. All later seals and images show the same composition, but the size and shape of the castle has changed considerably. Similarly, the nettle-leaf of Holstein is sometimes shown without a shield.
