In the 12<sup>th</sup> century a castle was built in the village, which was used regularly as residence for the Archbishops of Trier. The oldest seal dates from the 13<sup>th</sup> century and shows a fortress, with in the gate the image of St. Peter, patron saint of the city. Later seals all show the cross of the [[Trier (State)|State of Trier]]. The present arms show the cross in opposite colours to the arms of the State of Trier and have been used since the 16<sup>th</sup> century.
