PRIEKULE TOWN

Region : Kurzeme
Municipality : Priekule

Arms of Priekule (town)

Official blazon

Sarkanā laukā sudraba mūris ar diviem tornīšiem un vaļēju arku.

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted in 1938.

Priekule is first mentioned in 1483 as a fortified manor, called Preekuln in German. The town started to develop since 1871, when the railway St. Petersburg - Warsaw was built. The Government of Latvia granted town rights to Priekule in 1928.

The arms show a part of former manor fortifications, called Zviedru varti (Swedish gate), built in 1688.
