District (Kreis) : Amberg-Sulzbach (until 1973 Amberg)
Additions : 1971 Vilshofen
Official blazon
- (de) In Silber ein linksgewendeter, rot gezungter schwarzer Rüde mit goldenem Halsband.
Origin/meaning
The arms were probably granted in the 15th century, but the document got lost in 1662. After the merger with Vilshofen the arms were again granted on June 16, 1972.
The oldest known image of the arms dates from 1568 in the roll of arms made by Apian. The arms were identical to the present arms, except that the dog was facing right instead of left. Since the 19th century the dog is facing left. The dog, a Rüde in German, is a canting symbol.
