English Vert, perched in a linden tree argent a magpie proper, on a base wavy argent an oak sprig vert.

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on August 25, 1999.

The wavy base indicates the Broklandsau, which forms the Western and Southern border of the municipality. The division is also an allusion to the geographical location of the municipality: on the one hand, the lowlands with low-lying moor areas, on the other hand, the high-lying geest (sandy) areas.

The linden tree with a magpie in the center, represents the so-called "Dithmarscher Wunderbaum", which once stood in Süderheistedt, which is confirmed by maps from the early modern period. According to legends, some peculiarities were attached to the mighty old tree, whose branches were strangely crossed. It was considered a "freedom tree" because it was said to remain green as long as Dithmarschen was free. It is therefore also to be seen as a symbol of Dithmarscher pride in freedom. When the county lost its freedom in 1559, after the conquest of the Aubrücke near Süderheistedt in the immediate vicinity of the tree, the tree withered in the following years in accordance with this prophecy.
According to the legend, however, Dithmarschen will regain its freedom when a magpie breeds on the tree and raises five white young and the tree will then turn green again. However, this prophecy never came true, and the tree is no longer there.

The green background color refers to the rural character of the community and, on the other hand, embodies the existing agriculture with its predominantly green fields. In addition, the green is intended to create a connection to the municipal forest.

The two oak leaves and acorn, symbolize the local landmark, the Vogelstangenberg. This is a square in the center of the village, which is lined with very old oak trees and in the middle of which is the bird perch of the "Papagoyengilde Einigkeit" from 1621, the oldest association in Süderheistedt. This place embodies the traditions of the village not only for the bird guild, but also for the other active clubs. The crossed position of the leaves illustrates the harmony of the different associations among themselves and the fruit (acorn) their liveliness.
