Origin/meaning
The arms were granted in 1936 (officially to Amt Menden) and continued on February 15, 1979.
The arms show in the upper part the lion of the Counts of Berg, as the area belonged historically to Berg. The lower part shows the arms of the Lords of Menden.
The Amt Menden did not have historical seals or arms. When, in 1934, the Governor of the Siegkreis District asked whether the Amt used arms, the answer was negative. However, the Amt tstarted immediately a procedure to design new arms. A search for historical arms did not show any results, so the Amt asked the State Archives in Düsseldorf for help. The Archives came with several possible ideas; most of the are historically belonged to the Niederpleis parish in the Amt Blankenberg of the County Berg. Also the Siegburg abbey had many possessions in the area and thus the arms of Berg and the Siegburg Abbey could be used. In addition they mentioned the medieval Lords of Menden and their successors the Lords of Lüninck as options. With these elements a heraldic designer in Düsseldorf provided three options for the Amt.
The first and second option combined the lion of Berg in the upper half and the arms of the Lords of Menden in the lower half. The first was later adopted as the arms for the Amt, the second is shown below.
The third proposal showed the full lion of Berg, holding a shield with the arms of the Lords of Menden, and a sparrow from the arms of the Lords of Lüninck:
The council opted for the first proposal, but another proposal was put forward by the Mayor; a shield with thee perches. These fish were taken from the arms of the Von Proff family, descendents of a side branch of the Lords of Menden, who still owned some property in the area. In 1675 the family received permission to combine their arms with the historical arms of the Lords of Menden. The council, however, decided for the first proposal, which was granted in 1936.
The colours of the lion of Berg in the original proposal were not correct, and were changed in 1977.
