Origin/meaning
The bow and quiver are taken from the arms of some Maloney family and are thus used here as a symbol for the last name of the bishop. The bow is also a symbol of strength and the arrow a symbol of flashing light. In the shadow of his hand he hath protected me and made me as a chosen arrow. In his quiver he hath hidden me and he said to me Thou art my servant Israel. (Isais XLIX, 2,3.)
The moon with 12 stars is a symbol for St. Mary, and also symbolises his position as Rector of the American College in Leuven (Belgium), which is under the patronage of Mary.
The motto Sicut qui ministrat is chosen from the Gospel of St. Luke, Chapter XXII, v. 26. This was chosen by Bishop Maloney for personal reasons and because it fits well with his name of ancient Irish origin which means grandson ( or son) of the tonsured servant of the Lord.
