Origin/meaning

These arms have been officially granted on 6th September 1994.

The arms of the town show traditionally the castle of La Geltrú (11^th century) and the royal arms of Catalonia-Aragon (four pales Gules on Or), reminding the jurisdiction of the Crown over the town. The municipal charter was granted by king Jaume I in 1274, and Vilanova became a "street of Barcelona" (a town with the same rights as the capital city) by privilege given by king Alfons IV in 1418.
