Origin/meaning

The stylized Greek letters Chi and Ro, as the starting letter of the name Xριστός - Krist. During the time of persecution, Christians used this symbol for mutual recognition, while persecutors did not understand what it was all about. The white sign of Christ marks the wholeness of the Eucharist, in which Christ gives us as a food for eternal life, in the sacrificial sacrifice of the New Alliance, as the supreme love of God towards man.

The red color is the color of martyrdom, which was the most brilliant form of testimony for Christ and the Church. There are two stars in the red field, which are taken from the arms of the city of Križevci. On the white field at the bottom of the shield there is a stylized tower from the arms of the city of Bjelovar. The tower also symbolizes security and firmness, and reminds us of the scriptural text of the firm city that the Lord raises us (cf. 26: 1), a hint of the heavenly city of Jerusalem, the celebrated Church in which Gods are in all (Eph 1: 3; ).

The red and white are also the colours of Croatia.

The motto Ljubiti Boga i bližnjega translates as "Love of God and Neighbor", inspired by Christ's commandment of love, reflects exactly what is on the coat of arms. Christ loved us and surrendered ourselves to us, for our salvation.
