Origin/meaning

The town was founded by King Premysl Otakar II in 1262. In its seal and then also in its coat-of-arms, the town originally (the latest from the year 1350) used a winged, two legged dragon as it was jumping to the right with its head, on a long neck, turned to the left. Its tail was twisted down into a coil. On the 20th of October 1471, King Vladislav II improved this emblem by adding Saint George as he is slaying the dragon.

The town has been using these improved arms ever since.
