Origin/meaning

The arms are of typical medieval design, showing a gate with two towers and the arms of the local lord, in this case the arms of the Counts of Henneberg. The city became a possession of the counts in the 12^th century. The oldest known seal dates from 1561 and shows the same composition. The combination most likely is older, dating from the 13th or 14^th century, but no seals from that time still exist.
