Origin/meaning

Westerburg was the seat of the Lords of Westerburg, who granted the city rights in 1292. The oldest seal dates from the 14th century and already shows the above arms. The tower indicates the Westerburg castle. The small shields show an eagle and the arms of the Lords of Westerburg. The origin of the eagle is not clear. The present image shows the eagle in the colours of the Counts of Leiningen, but it may also originally have been the imperial eagle.
