Official blazon
German In Gold ein mit einer silbernen Schrägleiste überdeckter, rot bewehrter schwarzer Löwe, links oben beseitet von einer aufrechten roten Fischangel.
English blazon wanted

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on January 10, 1994.

Zeil received city rights in the early 14th century from the Bishop of Bamberg. As with several other towns in the State of Bamberg, the city used the lion of Bamberg as its arms. To differentiate the arms with those of Bamberg, a fish hook was added to the arms. The hook is taken from the arms of Bishop Lamprecht von Brunn (1347-1399), who founded the city. In the 17th century the hook gradually disappears from the seals of the city.

In 1819 the arms were replaced by a shield divided in blue and silver, the colours of Bayern, as the State of Bamberg was incorporated into Bayern and all old symbols were abolished. In 1837 the old arms were restored, but without the hook, which was only added again in 1994.
