Origin/meaning :
Zeil received city rights in the early 14th century from the Bishop of Bamberg. As with several other towns in the State of Bamberg, the city used the lion of Bamberg as its arms. The arms were replaced by a shield divided in blue and silver, the colours of Bayern, as the State of Bamberg was incorporated into Bayern. In 1837 the old arms were restored.
