Origin/meaning

The arms were officially adopted on March 3, 2023.

The upper half shows the imposing fountain known as the Old Cellar. Built in the 18th or 19th century, it is the source of the Vienne river, which swells impetuously in the event of heavy rainfall. The fiery character of this source is evoked by the lion appearing to emerge from behind the fountain.

The crowned lion is taken from the arms of the Pontailler family, lords of Varogne in the 15th and 16th centuriesre. Placed on a blue field, the lion refers to the Franche-Comté region in which the municipality is situated.

The lower part of the shield is based on the arms of other local noble families. In the first half of the 14th century, Varogne belonged to the Oiselay family, whose coat of arms was gules with a golden band. The silhouette of this band, with its characteristic stair-step cutouts, has been taken up and split to form the initial of the municipality. The result is reminiscent of the layered dressed stones that frame the fountain.

The quintefeuille is taken from the arms of the Vergys, who succeeded the Pontaillers as lords of Varogne from the end of the 16th century to 1602. A stone with the quartered arms of Pontailler and Vergy remains in Flagy, a remnant of the old castle, once the seat of the lordship of Flagy-Varogne. As a stylized flower, the quintefeuille also refers to the rural character of the town.

The gold and gules are also the colors of almost all the seigniorial families which succeeded one another in Varogne: in addition to the Oiselays, the Pontaillers and the Vergys already mentioned, these included the Lords of Faucogney the Cusance and the Bauffremont families.
